Konorchek canyon is very similar to that of Charyn Canyon of Kazakstan, red soil mountains spread across vast area. Most of the canyon is dry, as such full or sand and small rocks. It takes 2 hours from the Bishkek city centre to get to the canyon. The canyon is on the way to Balkchy or Karakol so one can take any minibus which goes down that way. Initially I searched on chatGPT to know where I should take the bus and it mis-directed me to the old bus station which wasted an hour initially. So I would advise people who wants to hike straight away to go the new bus station and take the minibus.

At the entrance for 500m it goes through the road and ends into the dried river bed with lot of small yellow flowers. The overall hike is around 8 to 12kms forking after 5 kms. Going early is better as one can explore the area and if you are camper, it’s much better to camp and enjoy the day. I tagged along with a Russian family, settled in Kyrgyzstan, who are doing the hike. It was fun going out with the family and their daughter played a translator role for their parents.

The hike is easy and can be doable with small kids. Canyon is full of red Hills surrounding the area which could be confusing at times. The Russian father was heading the hike and I was just relaxing following his lead.

There are small flowers, and shrubs sparsly covering the ground. The smell of light green plants and jasmines are very good as it fills the air with the fragrance. Spotted usual birds and a small snake at the entrance.

We had lunch around 1PM, the Russian family shared their egg sandwich which was gracious of them and I shared some of the nuts I brought. We rested for 20 minutes and further hiked different section of the canyon till 3PM.

After taking few shots we started returning around 3PM and got at the parking lot at 4PM. The mother helped us to get the minibus but it took around 45 minutes so thats another delay. Finally I was there at the stay around 7PM, I was earlier planning to hitch hike as there are lot of cars going to Bishkek.

Overall it was a pleasant hike with some great views, I could have easily saved 2 hours in the beginning and in the end, anyway I was happy it did not rain.
